August! What a delight.
Refreshing in the summer heat, we are kicking off the month with a green and leafy comedy circuit from Viva Las Vegans and a Canterbury paddle along the Stour (Hawaiin themed, of course). Comic cons and comic-making feature, alongside truck racing, an international family festival and plenty of good music to accompany it all.
Viva Las Vegans: Vegan Comedy Night
Welcome to Viva Las Vegans, the first ever Vegan Stand-up Comedy Club, based in Canterbury. All the comedians are vegans and are here to entertain you whilst passively promoting the ideals of veganism (though they won’t just be talking about veganism). This comedy night is supported by Kent Vegan Festival.
On the bill they have a sterling list of professional vegan comedians, featuring, Matt Adlington, Paul Ashwell and headliner: Star of the BBC Asian Network: Ishi Kahn-Jackson!
Spreading his own breed of gloomy-emo-pop music across fourteen different countries, the chatty Bristolian will be in Canterbury for an evening of lyrical group therapy.
Alternative emo band Don’t Worry will be joining alongside a whole host of other great acts.
Dane John Gardens
To mark the charity’s 20th year, Music for Change presents a celebration of music from around the world in Canterbury’s Dane John Gardens.
This year they bring you Kefaya’s unique take on contemporary world fusion; Cuban Son and Salsa from Sarabanda, Arlet’s fusion of chamber music, Contemporary jazz and traditional folk; Senegalese kora virtuoso/singer Kadialy Kouyate, Emmanuel Okine and the UK African Acrobats and drumming with George Fiawoo.
It promises the best in world music, workshops, food stalls and more! A great day out and a lovely community-spirited event. And all for free!
The Monument: Unplugged
An evening of local artists belting out their best songs entirely acoustically.
Thomas Ashby + Phoebe Warden + O MATÆUS
The Penny Theatre
Talented singer songwriters will showcase their sounds at The Penny Theatre. Check them out here:
Mobile Comic Factory

Artist Jim Lockey will be cycling with his Mobile Comics Factory across Kent to create a series of hand-made magazines about our towns. Drop into Sidney Cooper to be a part of the project and contribute to the Canterbury edition. The event is free and all materials will be provided.
The finished work will be collected into a series of zines that will be available after the tour: mobilecomicsfactory.wordpress.com.

To be Beside: RESORT Studios
July 26 – Aug 17
Sidney Cooper Gallery
RESORT Studios was founded in Margate in 2013 by creative professionals looking for a space to work, collaborate and experiment together. The organisation’s dedication to both supporting their artist and designer members as well as working with the local community exemplifies the energy and ethos of Kent’s burgeoning art scene. During To be Beside, RESORT artists and makers will take over Sidney Cooper Gallery with a showcase of their works.

bOing! International Family Festival
Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 August
A festival of brilliant performance and creativity for all ages in Kent. Featuring performances, film screenings, installations, art from internationally renowned performers and street artists, it’s well worth walking up the hill to see what you can discover. It’s a festival that’s aimed at children, but there are plenty of free outdoor performances and activities.
City Stand-Up-Paddle Hawaiian Summer Parade
Leaving from The Millers Arms
If you’re a fan of paddle boarding, or just fancy seeing a spectacle — head on down to the river Stour on the 13th of August and watch the stand-up paddlers propel themselves along the river. The theme is Hawaiian dress.
Trucksport at Lydden Hill
Lydden Hill Race Circuit
There’ll be truck racing at Lydden Hill this August, with plenty of on-track truck racing action. Try saying that quickly.
A cascade of comic-con magic is heading to the historic cathedral city of Canterbury this August 12th, bringing everything from celebrity guests, cosplay competitions, Q&As and the finest traders from across the UK to Westgate Hall.
Opening hours: 10am – 5pm
