Canterbury Uncovered

New independent shops, bars and cafés to discover in the city this April

Unboxed Kent

17 Palace Street, Canterbury, CT1 2DZ

We’re increasingly aware of the importance of where our food comes from, seeking out more locally-sourced products with less impact on the environment. In 2014, the trade organisation Plastics Europe estimated that 3.7 million tonnes of plastic was being used per year in the UK.

Unboxed Kent provides a local alternative to the mainstream shops, offering a fresh perspective on shopping in the 21st-century. All of their products are biodegradable or eco-friendly and come without the plastic packaging, so you can enjoy plastic-free, zero-waste shopping. Bring your own container to fill up on your everyday essentials (pasta, washing up liquid etc) or purchase one in store to fill and re-use.

Dog Store

24 Sun Street, Canterbury, CT1 2HX

The Dog Store offers a range of healthy dog food, a Dog Bar (we’re curious), long-lasting toys, and luxury personalised products made on site. It also boasts the most handsome and fluffy clientele in the city. We highly recommend checking out their Facebook album, ‘Very Important Dogs‘.

Alice and the Hatter

29A St. Margaret’s Street, Canterbury CT1 2TG

“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?” – The Mad Hatter, Alice in Wonderland

Many of us fell in love with the story of Alice and Wonderland as children. So it makes complete sense that Alice and the Hatter has emerged, a place where we can live out our own Mad Hatter’s tea party.  A new tearoom has opened in homage to the book, offering an ambience best described as ‘curious’, fit with themed wall art, a chequered floor, throne chairs, teacup stools, grassy nooks and love seats to lounge upon.

The Parade Room at One Pound Lane

1 Pound Lane, Canterbury, CT1 2BZ

You may have visited The Pound before, but have you ever visited The Parade room? The Gaoler’s House and the Police Station have been lovingly restored to celebrate the building’s unique past, allowing you to explore one of the three original police cells and the formers Felons Day room. Enjoy bar food and their cocktail menu in Canterbury’s favourite ‘lock-in’.

Houdini’s Magic Bar

6 St Peter’s Street, Canterbury, CT1 2AT

Canterbury is welcoming Houdini’s Magic Bar to Canterbury – opening on Friday the 13th April, no less. Visit to ‘experience a world of wonder, intrigue and mystique’. See shows and exclusive performances by their resident magicians, many of whom are members of the prestigious Black Card Club and Magic Circle. Their grand opening weekend will feature a Guinness world record-breaking attempt from escapologist, Stuart Burrell! The fastest escape from a pair of double locked regulation prisoner transport irons is currently 1 min 3.78 sec.
